It's been a long wait of almost two years for Reacher fans, but finally season 2 is almost upon us, bringing us more from Alan Ritchson's hero.

The new season is set to adapt book 11 of the series, Bad Luck and Trouble, and while this marks a deviation in chronology from the books, the series will be stocking to their essence, by having Reacher move from place to place.

This means that, other than Ritchson and Maria Sten's Frances Neagley, there won't be many other familiar faces returning, with a brand-new guest cast joining for season 2.

After such a long wait for season 2, fans may be worrying that they'll get Reacher back now only to lose the show again – but never fear.

It has already been confirmed that the series will be returning for a third season, with the news having been announced during the Prime Video panel at CCXP in São Paulo, Brazil, earlier in December.

Read on for everything we know so far about Reacher season 2.

Reacher season 2 release date: When is it coming to Prime Video?

The Reacher Season 2 will premiere the first three of its eight episodes on 15th December 2023.

New episodes will drop weekly every Friday.

Season 2 was confirmed back in 2022, after season 1 became one of Prime Video's top five most-watched shows of all time based on its first three days of release.

Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios, said at the time in a statement: "The phenomenal debut of Reacher is a testament to Lee Child's creation of one of entertainment's most well-known heroes, Nick Santora's original approach to the storytelling.

"Alan's brilliant embodiment of the character, and the dedication of the talented people who worked tirelessly in front of and behind the camera to make such an undeniably binge-worthy series.

"The global impact of Reacher makes it one of Prime Video's biggest series debuts, and we can't wait to bring fans a second season of their new favourite show."

Prior to the series' renewal, there had been comments from Jack Reacher author himself Lee Child on the return of the series.

"By October there'll be 27 books, so there's 26 more seasons to go by, which time I'll be about 100," Child told press including RadioTimes.com.

"And that would work for me. But like everything in showbiz, everybody knows this, it's not up to me. It's not up to any of us. It's up to the viewer. Are they going to like it? And I think yes, they are."

The author added: "Nothing is ever certain, but they're going to love it, I think, and when you've got a series that people love, why not do a second season? Why not do a third? Why not do a 27th? By that time, I’ll have written some more. It could go on forever, literally to the heat-death of the universe."

Filming wrapped on the new season back in February and, judging by the clip shared by Prime Video at the time, the stakes are about to get even higher in the next instalment.

In the clip, actor Alan Ritchson can be seen in his Reacher costume with blood on his face, as he says: "I just came off set. Reacher Season 2, the last scene is done. As you can see, things got a little crazy. We promised things will be back bigger and better than ever. And we did not lie."

He adds: "It’s officially done. Season 2 is back bigger and better than ever. We promised we would, and the proof is in the pudding."

Reacher season 2 plot

The new season will be based on Lee Child's 11th book in the Jack Reacher series, Bad Luck and Trouble, as Alan Ritchson announced on Twitter.

The official synopsis for season 2 reads: "Reacher season 2 begins when veteran military police investigator Jack Reacher (Alan Ritchson) receives a coded message that the members of his former U.S. Army unit, the 110th MP Special Investigations, are being mysteriously and brutally murdered one by one.

"Pulled from his drifter lifestyle, Reacher reunites with three of his former teammates turned chosen family to investigate, including Frances Neagley (Maria Sten); Karla Dixon (Serinda Swan), a forensic accountant for whom Reacher has long had a soft spot; and fast-talking, switchblade-wielding family man David O'Donnell (Shaun Sipos).

"Together, they begin to connect the dots in a mystery where the stakes get higher at every turn, and that brings about questions of who has betrayed them – and who will die next.

"Using his inimitable blend of smarts and size, Reacher will stop at nothing to uncover the truth and protect the members of his unit. If there’s one thing Reacher and his team know for certain, it’s that you do not mess with the Special Investigators. This season, get ready for Reacher and the 110th to hit back hard."

Child had previously debated which of the Reacher novels could be the next to be adapted for the series.

"I haven't read the books. I've written them. I never reread them. I know them by reputation, what other people tell me about him," explained Child.

"And there are some that are really popular. And I think what was so great about this first season was Reacher's loneliness being assuaged by his relationships with other people, and I would like to see more of that. And there's two or three books that really stand out in that sense. So maybe one of them."

Is there a trailer for Reacher season 2?
